Main characters: Lou Yao Yao (female MC), 20; Qin Zhi (ML), 25
Supporting characters: Lou Qing Qing, Chen Hao
First of all, it’s a HE, set in modern times. The story is 30 chapters long, written in 2012.
As usual with titles, it’s up for interpretation. Literally it’s: Behind Vicious Woman, A Perfect Man. But saying Behind Every Vicious Woman Stands a Perfect Man is not generally true… Also the perfect in the sense of the context of the novel is loyal. And going by context again, I think what I picked as the title fits well. But yeah, I hate translating titles.
There is a rebirth/going back in time theme, as well as revenge theme. However, the revenge doesn’t constitute of rounding up the enemies and making them suffer/die. The MC realizes what has lead to the tragedies of her life; it all stemmed from her character and temper. So she changes herself. She treasures the important people, she leaves behind the toxic ones. And she aims to live a fulfilling life. That is her revenge – her being happy. It’s what I really liked about this novel.
A little bit more about the story (contains spoilers). In her original life, Yao Yao got a half-sister due to her father’s infidelity. That sister’s name is Qing Qing. Qing Qing really takes on the role of Cinderella – helping around with chores, though they have two housekeepers and no one is making her do anything; always going around looking like a little bullied white rabbit and earning everyone’s sympathy. Thanks to her, there are a lot of rumors about Yao Yao being a vicious woman. Because of Yao Yao’s quick temper, she only ends up worsening the rumors. It’s a vicious cycle making her more and more desperate.
In the role of Prince Charming we have Chen Hao. He has an inferiority complex due to his origins, always sensing that his rich peers belittle him because he’s just a nouveau riche. So in order to feel superior, he plays around with women’s feelings, watching them act stupid for him. I gotta say he’s a first class manipulator. He’s using some valid real life tactics when entrapping women. In the original life, he cheated on Yao Yao with Qing Qing, feeling it like some accomplishment to get both sisters. Qing Qing got pregnant. When Yao Yao learns of that, she has an argument with Qing Qing and some pushing around and a woefully placed fruit knife leads to Qing Qing’s death. Chen Hao remains unfeeling and still plans for his marriage to Yao Yao (money is involved at this point).
Qin Zhi, a man who has loved Yao Yao since they were children, and always put up with her whims and her temper, takes the blame for Qing Qing’s death and goes to prison. It’s at that moment that Yao Yao wakes up and takes a good look at what her life has become. Shortly after, she dies in a car crash and gets reborn. That’s basically what happens in the first chapter.
My personal thoughts on the story: I’m a bit bored of modern romances, honestly. It’s only the rebirth theme that made me read this, and the fact that it was short. Because it’s only 30 chapters long, it didn’t drag. The novel concentrates more on emotional development and life lessons. The MC gets a satisfying revenge without hurting anyone. I like how one of the morals of the story is ‘Look at yourself first before blaming others.’ It’s an enjoyable read, all while being meaningful as well. The antagonists learn their lesson as well.
